The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is a mandatory retirement scheme for most salaried employees. You and your employer each contribute 12% of Basic + DA every month, and the EPFO credits interest once a year.

Enter your current Basic + DA, age and expected annual increment to project the corpus at retirement.

Assumptions used
  • Interest applied yearly on the opening balance plus half the year's contributions.
  • Basic + DA grows by a constant annual increment; the EPFO rate is held constant.

How EPF contributions are split

You contribute 12% of Basic + DA to EPF. The employer also contributes 12%, but part of it — 8.33% of Basic + DA, capped at 8.33% of ₹15,000 (₹1,250) — goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), and the remainder goes to EPF.

Monthly EPF addition = 12% of (Basic + DA) + [12% of (Basic + DA) − EPS share]

  • EPS share = min( 8.33% of (Basic + DA), ₹1,250 )

Interest is applied to the running balance once a year at the EPFO-declared rate. This calculator grows Basic + DA by your chosen increment each year.

EPF tax treatment

  • Your contribution qualifies under Section 80C (old regime).
  • Interest and the maturity amount are tax-free if you have five years of continuous service.
  • Interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh in a year (₹5 lakh where there is no employer contribution) is taxable.

The EPF rate is declared annually and applied to the running monthly balance. Projections assume the rate stays constant, which it will not. Rate used: 8.25% (FY 2024-25), per EPFO Central Board of Trustees interest-rate declaration. The EPS pension is calculated separately and is not part of this corpus.

Don't withdraw when switching jobs

Transfer the EPF balance to your new employer instead of withdrawing it. Withdrawing before five years of service is taxable and, more importantly, breaks decades of compounding.

Rates & rules: FY 2024-25. Source: EPFO Central Board of Trustees interest-rate declaration. The EPF rate is declared annually and applied to the running monthly balance. Projections assume the rate stays constant, which it will not.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I and my employer contribute to EPF?

Each contributes 12% of Basic + DA. Of the employer's 12%, 8.33% of Basic + DA (capped at ₹1,250) goes to the pension scheme (EPS) and the rest to EPF.

What is the current EPF interest rate?

The EPFO declares the rate each year. This calculator uses 8.25% (FY 2024-25). It is applied to the running yearly balance.

Is EPF withdrawal taxable?

It is tax-free after five years of continuous service. Withdrawn earlier, the employer contribution and interest are taxable, and TDS may apply.

Does this calculator include the EPS pension?

No. It projects only the EPF corpus. The EPS pension is computed from pensionable salary and service under a separate formula.
