How the tax is computed
- Taxable income = gross income − standard deduction (if salaried) − eligible deductions (old regime only).
- Slab tax is applied band by band.
- Section 87A rebate is applied if taxable income is within the limit; basic marginal relief applies just above the new-regime threshold.
- Surcharge applies at higher incomes (10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore under the new regime).
- A 4% health and education cess is added on tax plus surcharge.
For resident individuals below 60. Senior-citizen basic-exemption limits under the old regime, and taxpayer-specific surcharge/marginal-relief edge cases, are simplified. Which regime should I pick?
If your eligible deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home-loan interest, NPS) are small, the new regime's lower rates usually win. If you claim large deductions, run both here and compare the total tax.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Section 87A rebate?
A rebate that reduces tax to nil for lower incomes. Under the FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) new regime it applies up to ₹12,00,000 of taxable income (before cess); under the old regime, up to ₹5,00,000.
Is the standard deduction available in the new regime?
Yes. Salaried individuals and pensioners get a ₹75,000 standard deduction under the new regime and ₹50,000 under the old regime.
Does the new regime allow 80C and 80D?
No. The new regime disallows most deductions and exemptions, including 80C, 80D, HRA and LTA. Employer's NPS contribution under 80CCD(2) is a notable exception.
How accurate is this calculator?
It is a good estimate for a resident individual below 60 with straightforward income. It simplifies senior-citizen limits and some surcharge edge cases. Confirm with a professional or the Income Tax Department for filing.
