Fixed Deposit (FD) Calculator

A fixed deposit (FD) locks a lump sum with a bank for a fixed term at a fixed rate. Interest is usually compounded quarterly and paid at maturity (a cumulative FD) or at regular intervals (a non-cumulative FD).

Enter the deposit amount, the rate your bank offers, the tenure and the compounding frequency.

Assumptions used
  • Cumulative FD: interest reinvested and paid at maturity.
  • TDS and premature-withdrawal penalties are not deducted.

FD maturity formula

A = P × (1 + r ÷ (100 × n))^(n × t)

  • P = deposit amount
  • r = annual interest rate (%)
  • n = compounding periods per year (4 for quarterly)
  • t = tenure in years

Interest earned = A − P.

Worked example

  1. ₹5,00,000 for 5 years at 7% p.a., compounded quarterly.
  2. n = 4, so quarterly rate = 7 ÷ 400 = 0.0175, and n×t = 20 quarters.
  3. A = 5,00,000 × (1.0175)^20 ≈ ₹7,06,000.
  4. Interest ≈ ₹2,06,000.

Points to keep in mind

  • Senior citizens usually get an extra 0.25–0.75% per annum.
  • TDS applies when interest across your deposits at a bank crosses the annual threshold; submit Form 15G/15H if eligible.
  • Breaking an FD early attracts a penalty, typically 0.5–1% off the applicable rate.
  • FD deposits are insured by DICGC up to ₹5,00,000 per bank per depositor.

Cumulative vs non-cumulative

A cumulative FD reinvests interest and pays everything at maturity — best for growth. A non-cumulative FD pays interest monthly or quarterly — useful for regular income.

Frequently asked questions

How is FD interest compounded?

Most Indian banks compound FD interest quarterly. Some offer monthly compounding on request. This calculator lets you pick the frequency your bank uses.

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes. FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct TDS once annual interest at that bank crosses the prescribed threshold.

What happens if I break my FD early?

You get the rate applicable for the period the deposit actually ran, minus a premature-withdrawal penalty of usually 0.5% to 1%.

Are fixed deposits safe?

Bank FDs are low-risk and deposits are insured by DICGC up to ₹5,00,000 per bank per depositor. Company and NBFC deposits carry more credit risk and are not insured.
