Percentage formula

X% of Y = (X ÷ 100) × Y

To find what one number is as a percentage of another: (A ÷ B) × 100.

Worked examples

  1. 15% of 2,000 = (15 ÷ 100) × 2,000 = 300.
  2. 250 is what percent of 2,000? (250 ÷ 2,000) × 100 = 12.5%.
  3. A price rises from 800 to 1,000: increase = (1,000 − 800) ÷ 800 × 100 = 25%.
  4. A price falls from 1,000 to 800: decrease = (1,000 − 800) ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 20%.

Percentage points vs percent

If a rate goes from 8% to 10%, that is a rise of 2 percentage points, but a 25% increase in relative terms. The two are often confused in news reports.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For 15% of 2,000: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15, then 0.15 × 2,000 = 300.

How do I find what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the first number by the second and multiply by 100. For example, 250 out of 2,000 is (250 ÷ 2,000) × 100 = 12.5%.

How do I calculate percentage increase or decrease?

Take the difference between the new and old values, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. A positive result is an increase; a negative result is a decrease.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

Percentage points measure the arithmetic gap between two percentages. Percent measures the relative change. Moving from 8% to 10% is +2 points but +25 percent.
