Discount formulas
Discount amount = MRP × Discount% ÷ 100
Price after discount = MRP − Discount amount
Final price = Price after discount × (1 + GST% ÷ 100)
Worked example
- MRP ₹3,000, discount 30%, GST 0%.
- Discount amount = 3,000 × 30 ÷ 100 = ₹900.
- Price after discount = ₹2,100. That is the final price when there is no added tax.
- With 12% GST on the discounted price: final = 2,100 × 1.12 = ₹2,352.
Reading a sale correctly
- 'Up to 50% off' means the maximum, not the typical, discount.
- Check whether GST is already included in the displayed price or added at checkout.
- 'Buy 2 get 1 free' is a 33.3% effective discount, not 50%.
- Two successive discounts of 20% and 10% are not 30% — they compound to 28%.
Successive discounts
For back-to-back discounts, apply them one after another. A 20% then 10% discount on ₹1,000 gives ₹1,000 → ₹800 → ₹720, an effective 28% off.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the price after a discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the discount amount, then subtract it from the original price.
Is GST added before or after the discount?
GST is charged on the transaction value, which is the price after any invoice discount. This calculator applies GST to the discounted price.
How do successive discounts work?
They apply one after the other, not added together. A 30% then 20% discount leaves 0.7 × 0.8 = 0.56 of the price, i.e. a 44% effective discount.
What does 'up to 70% off' really mean?
It means at least one item has that discount; most items will be discounted less. Always check the actual price of the specific product.
